Sophie took the braid out of her hair. For this mission, it would actually be better for her to look older than she was.

Jack paced in her room. “Ellie’s really nice. You shouldn’t do anything to hurt her.”

“I’m not going to hurt her.” Embarrassment was likely. But embarrassment didn’t hurt.

“Okay.” He wrung out his hands. “It’s just, I really like her, and if you do something so she doesn’t come back—”

“We have to get rid of her. We don’t have a choice.” Sophie didn’t think it would help to mention that she and Jack were only going to be at the Westons for five more days, which wasn’t even long enough that they’d have another evening with Ellie. “She’s not gonna let us set up the traps, and we have to—”

“I know, I know, just . . . get it over with.”

She nodded. “It’ll just be a minute. I need you with me, though.”

“That wasn’t part of the deal.”

“How am I supposed to do this without you?”

Jack groaned.

“What’s the problem, Jack?”

“I just . . . don’t want to see Ellie get hurt.”

Sophie raised her eyebrows. “What, do you like her?”

“No!” Jack’s cheeks turned pink. “She’s, like, eight years older than me.”

“But you think she’s hot.”

“No. That’s gross.”

Sophie rolled her eyes a little. She wasn’t sure what Jack saw in Ellie anyway. Ellie had stupid short brown hair and a stupid nose piercing, and she was all curvy like a teenager. “Whatever. But don’t you think this family’s safety is more important than Ellie’s feelings?”

Jack perked up at that—Sophie knew using the word “family” would have an impact. He nodded solemnly. “Okay. Let’s go.”

Sophie stepped out into the kitchen, where Ellie was getting Ashleigh into her high chair. Jack followed behind, but he sat at the table, just far enough away from Sophie that she’d be able to make out Ellie’s thoughts.

“Hi,” Sophie said.

Ellie turned. This the troublemaker? She’s adorable. Eh, seen that before. Kid I used to watch at the swim club, oof. “Hi Sophie. We’re gonna eat in a few minutes, are you hungry?”

“Yeah.” Sophie put on a sweet smile. “There’s a bakery in the city. Homestyle Bakery? You should go pick up some muffins.”
